Frequently Asked Questions

Analog Thermometers, Hygrometers, Rain Gauges and Clocks

How accurate are analog thermometers?

All of our analog thermometers are calibrated and accurate to ± 2° Fahrenheit.

Is the thermometer weather resistant?

Yes, our thermometers are weather resistant and suitable for outdoor use.

Does the printing fade on the thermometer if left outside in the sun?

The UV resistant inks we use have been tested to last 3 years of continual outdoor exposure.

What is the best placement for an outdoor thermometer?

Outdoor thermometers should be placed in shaded areas. Placing the thermometers in the sun will give false readings.

Does a thermometer need to be calibrated?

All our thermometers are calibrated at the factory and do not need to be re-calibrated.

How long should batteries last in an outdoor clock?

Alkaline batteries should last one year.

What is a hygrometer?

A hygrometer in an instrument which measures relative humidity, the amount of water vapor in the air.

Where should I locate my rain gauge?

For the most accurate readings, rain gauges should be placed in an open space, not covered by trees, shrubs or statuary.

Digital Weather Stations, Thermometers, Hygrometers and Rain Gauges

How accurate are the digital thermometers?

All of our digital thermometers are calibrated and accurate to ± 2° Fahrenheit.

How accurate are digital weather stations and thermometers?

On a digital weather station, the accuracy of the hygrometer is ± 5%, a thermometer is ± 2° Fahrenheit and a digital clock is accurate to ± 2 minutes per month.

How accurate are the outdoor rain gauges?

Rain Gauges are accurate ± 4 to 6%.

What is a W W V B radio controlled clock? Is this the same as an Atomic clock?

A WWVB radio controlled clock is a name for a self setting clock. This type of clock contains a miniature radio receiver that synchronizes and sets itself to the Standard Time signal broadcast from the National Institute of Standards and Technology via radio station WWVB in Fort Collins Colorado. An Atomic clock is a high tech clock that contains an atomic oscillator that accurately measures the passage of time. This measurement of time serves as the standard for accurate time and is encoded and transmitted via WWVB radio station for self setting clocks to synchronize with. Often manufacturers incorrectly label their radio controlled clocks as atomic clocks.

What is the range for the wireless (RF) outdoor thermometers?

The range for the wireless outdoor thermometers is 100 feet. The range maybe shorter based on the level of interference present at the location of the base station and remote. Transmitting through multiple or dense walls and high levels of interference created by electronics can impact performance.

Where are the best locations to place my wireless (RF) base station and remote sensors?

The best location to place your base station is away from TV, phone, computers and other electronic interference. The remote sensor should be placed away from power lines. Signal reception is best when the remote transmitter and base station are positioned in line of sight to each other.

Where can I purchase additional remote sensors?

To purchase additional sensors, please call Springfield Precision customer service at 866-843-3905. Please be sure you have your sensor available for reference.

How long will the batteries last in the wireless base station and remote sensor?
Alkaline batteries should last up to one year. However, in areas where there are extended periods of time with below freezing temperatures it is recommended that Lithium batteries are used for peak performance.

I lost my instruction manual, where can I find another one?

NOAA Weather Radios (NWR)

What is NOAA?

NOAA is the U.S. National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration. NOAA is the complete source for weather and emergency information for the United States. They provide the broadcast for the National Weather Service's forecasts, warnings and watches of dangerous weather and other hazardous conditions. This information is broadcast as a public service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week over 985 network stations that extend over 50 states. The website for NOAA information is www.NOAA.gov.

How does a NOAA radio work?

A NWR receives a broadcast warning and post-event information for all types of hazards – including natural (such as earthquakes or avalanches), environmental (such as chemical releases or oil spills), and public safety (such as AMBER alerts or 911).

Is there a way to test a NOAA radio?

NWR alarm features normally run tests each Wednesday between 10 a.m. and noon local time. Tests may occur at other days and times when there is a threat of severe weather in the listening area or for other reasons.

How long should the batteries last?

Alkaline batteries should last a month when the radio is in the "ON" position for 24 hours per day, 7 days a week.

Where can I find an optional AC adapter?

An AC adapter can be found at most electronic retailers like Radio Shack® or the electronic departments of your local retailer. Please refer to your instruction manual for the correct specifications.

Cooking Thermometers and Timers

How accurate are these thermometers?

Refrigerator thermometers are accurate ± 2°, Oven thermometers ± 15° and Meat thermometers ± 2° Fahrenheit.

Do the cooking thermometers need to be calibrated?

All our thermometers are calibrated at the factory and do not need to be re-calibrated.

Can I leave the cooking thermometers in the oven?

Thermometers designed to measure the temperature of an oven can be left in the oven. Our meat probe thermometer and deep fry thermometers are designed to be left in the oven or hot oil for long periods of time. Instant read thermometers should never be left in the oven. They are more sensitive instruments and are designed to take quick measurements of the internal temperature of food.

Can I put a thermometer in the dishwasher?

Non battery operated probe style thermometers are designed to be placed in dishwasher.

What are the recommended safe temperatures for a refrigerator and freezer?

Safe temperatures for the refrigerator are 34° to 40°F, and for the freezer -10° to 0°F.

What is NSF?

NSF International is the National Sanitation Foundation, The Public Health and Safety Company™, a not-for-profit, non-governmental organization, the world leader in standards development, product certification, education, and risk-management for public health and safety. Their website is www.nsf.org.

How do I use my mechanical timer (non digital)?

Always wind the knob clockwise to the end of the minute track and then turn counterclockwise to the desired minute mark to ensure a long ring announcement. The timer will ring when the pointer passes the 1 minute mark and the timer will wind down and stop at 0.
